Actor Andika Gumilang allegedly used embezzled Citibank customer funds that he received from suspect Inong Malinda Dee to buy a Hummer, the National Police chief of detectives said on Wednesday.
"The money he received was spent to buy a vehicle, it's a Hummer that we had already seized previously," Comr. Gen. Ito Sumardi said, adding that Andika was not Malinda's boyfriend, but rather her husband.
"He has been named as suspect in relation with his status as husband," Ito said.
Malinda's lawyer previously quoted his client as saying that she did not have any “special relations” with Andika, and that “he was just Malinda's foster child.”
Andika, 22, is accused of receiving at least Rp 311 million ($36,000) from Malinda out of a believed total of Rp 20 billion stolen from the premium customer accounts.
"We arrested him in South Jakarta on Tuesday and we are going to put him in our custody on Wednesday," National Police spokesman Chief Comr. Boy Raffly Amar told reporters.
Andika could be charged under Article 6 of the 2002 law on money laundering that carries a minimum of five years imprisonment and a fine of up to Rp 15 billion.
A source told the Jakarta Globe that Malinda, 47, had confessed that she “went crazy” after being involved in “a special relationship” with Andika in early 2010.
Police have so far named three tellers as suspects, but none have been detained.
