City to finish 12 corridors in 2012

The Jakarta government under Governor Fauzi Bowo will only finish 12 corridors of TransJakarta busway by the end of his term in 2012 due to limited budget, down from its previous target of 15 corridors.

Fauzi said Thursday it would be difficult for the city administration to build the exclusive lanes in the last three corridors due to the hectic traffic there.
The three lanes in question are corridor 13 connecting Kampung Melayu in East Jakarta and Bekasi, corridor 14 between Manggarai in South Jakarta and University of Indonesia in Depok and corridor 15 plying Cileduk and Blok M in South Jakarta.

A solution for the traffic gridlock in the three corridors, Fauzi said, would be constructing elevated roads in some sections for the busway.

“Our 2011 city budget cannot afford to allocate funds for the projects,” he said.

Head of the Jakarta’s Development Planning Agency Sarwo Handayani could not predict when the three corridors would materialize.

“We will optimize the operation of the 12 corridors by improving the feeder, the number of buses and infrastructure,” she said.

The city currently has eight corridors of TransJakarta and aims to finish corridor 9 and 10 by the end of this year.
