Volcano eruptions cancel flights to Yogyakarta

Soekarno Hatta Interantional Airport authorities decided to cancel all flights leaving for Yogyakarta for safety reasons due to the impacts of powerful eruptions of Mt. Merapi on Friday.

The cancellation followed a notice from the sultanate city’s Adi Sucipto airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I on Friday. The policy affected a total of 41 flights bound for Yogyakarta, causing thousands of passengers to be stranded for hours at Terminal 1.

Harry Cahyono, corporate secretary of Soekarno-Hatta airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II, said flights heading to Yogyakarta would likely resume at 6 a.m. on Saturday.

“However, we still have to take into account the situation in Yogyakarta via reports from Adi Suciupto airport operator and weather forecast from the meteorology and geophysics aganecy,” Harry told The Jakarta Post.

In its notice to PT Angkasa Pura II, the Yogyakarta airport operator said the airport’s runway was entirely covered by volcanic ash following the latest eruptions of Merapi.

“We don’t want to take any risk because of the present condition,” Harry said.

PT Angksa Pura II spokesman Andang Santoso said the 41 cancelled flights were Lion Air (16) Garuda Indonesia (16), Sriwijaya Air (2), Batavia Air (2) Air Asia (2) and Mandala Airlines (3).

Andang said the airliners were responsible for the handling of their passengers.
