Lava from Mount Merapi's latest eruption destroys two hamlets

Two hamlets at Mount Merapi slopes have been destroyed by lava sparked from a major eruption which took place at the world’s most active mount on early Friday.
One of the destroyed hamlets was Brogangsuruh at Argomulyo village, Cangkringan district in Sleman regency, and the other was Slodokan at Wukirsari village also in the same district.

At Brogangsuruh, which was located 15 meters from Gendol river, local residents had actually built a permanent embankment made of reinforced concrete at three meters in height and two meters in thickness along the river. However, the construction was not able to prevent the hot lava flow from  jumping over the embankment. The hot volcanic materials devastated 10 houses at the hamlet.
“Thirty one bodies were discovered at five of the 10 destroyed houses. The other five houses have not been checked yet due to the hot sands and gravels which buried the houses,” Sajarwo, a Wukirsari resident, said as quoted by the Antara news agency.
He explained the flow of lava along Gendol river was still hot. “It sparked hot ash so that the air around the river become hot,” he said.
At Slodokan nearly half of the hamlet was covered by the hot lava. At least five houses were burned. No evacuation could have not been done yet because the volcanic materials covering the areas were still hot.
